FIFA World Cup Draws 44M Fans Across 22 Editions

(MENAFN) Nearly 44 million spectators have passed through the turnstiles across 22 editions of the FIFA World Cup, painting a sweeping picture of football's most-watched global spectacle.

Compiled figures from tournament history reveal a grand total of 43,936,730 fans witnessed 964 matches at stadiums worldwide, translating to an average of 45,577 supporters per game.

The Most and Least Attended Tournaments
The 1994 World Cup on US soil remains the undisputed attendance champion, pulling in 3,587,538 spectators across 52 matches — an average of 68,991 fans per game, a figure no tournament has since matched.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, the 1934 World Cup in Italy recorded the lowest overall attendance in the competition's history, drawing just 363,000 spectators. France's 1938 edition, meanwhile, posted the weakest per-match average, with only 20,872 fans filling seats for each contest.

The most recent edition, the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, attracted 3,404,252 fans to stadiums, averaging 53,191 attendees per match — a strong showing for a tournament hosted in one of football's smallest nations.

Maracanã's Unmatched Record
No venue looms larger in World Cup attendance history than Brazil's Maracanã Stadium, one of the sport's most storied and enduring arenas.

The 1950 final between Brazil and Uruguay — played on Maracanã's hallowed turf — drew 173,850 ticketed spectators, cementing it as the highest-attended match in the tournament's entire history. The actual number of people believed to have been inside the ground that day reportedly surpassed 200,000.

Two additional matches from that same tournament, both staged at Maracanã, also rank among the most attended in World Cup history. Brazil's clash against Spain attracted 152,772 fans, while their encounter with Yugoslavia was watched by 142,429 spectators — underscoring the unrivaled place that Rio de Janeiro's iconic stadium holds in the annals of the beautiful game.
